How to read your results

Positive (Elevated FSH)

Positive (Elevated FSH)

The test line is equal to or darker than the control line This indicates your FSH level is elevated (25 mIU/mL or higher). This may be associated with hormonal changes that can occur during the menopause transition, especially if results remain elevated across multiple tests.
Negative (FSH not elevated)

Negative (FSH not elevated)

Only the control line appears, or the test line is lighter than the control line. This indicates your FSH level is not elevated at this time (below 25 mIU/mL). FSH levels can fluctuate, so a single result may not reflect long-term patterns.
Invalid

Invalid

Control line does not appear This means the test did not function correctly. Repeat the test with a new strip.

Understanding your results

A single result is just a snapshot. Repeating tests helps you see a pattern over time.
For better insight, test multiple times, about 5–7 days apart.
FSH results are most helpful when considered together with:

  • Changes in your cycle
  • Symptoms commonly associated with perimenopause or menopause

Examples may include:

  • Changes in cycle length or missed periods
  • Hot flashes or night sweats
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Mood changes
  • Vaginal dryness

These symptoms can vary and may have different causes. They do not necessarily indicate the menopause transition on their own.

Limitations

  • This test cannot diagnose menopause on its own.

  • FSH levels may vary and can be affected by medications or health conditions.

  • Results should be considered together with symptoms and discussed with a healthcare professional.

  • Avoid testing during days of heavy menstrual bleeding.

  • Hormonal medications (including contraceptives or hormone therapy) may affect results.

Most common questions

When should I start using a menopause test?

You can begin testing when you start noticing changes such as irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, or other symptoms commonly associated with the menopause transition.

How often should I test?

Because hormone levels can change over time, testing more than once can be helpful. Repeating the test 5-7 days apart may give better insight into ongoing patterns.

Can I still get my period if I’m in perimenopause?

Yes. Many people continue to have periods - sometimes regular, sometimes irregular - during perimenopause. Hormonal changes can begin years before periods stop completely.

Can stress or lifestyle affect menopause symptoms?

Yes. Stress, sleep, diet, exercise, and overall health can influence how menopause symptoms feel and how hormone changes are experienced.

When should I talk to a healthcare professional?

If you have ongoing symptoms, multiple positive results, or concerns about changes in your cycle or health, a healthcare professional can help evaluate your results and discuss next steps.

Can menopause testing help explain symptoms I’m having?

Menopause testing can provide insight into hormone changes that may be happening in your body. Results are most helpful when considered together with symptoms such as sleep changes, hot flashes, or cycle irregularity.

How long does the menopause transition usually last?

The menopause transition can last several years and varies from person to person. Hormone levels and symptoms may change gradually over time, which is why tracking patterns - not just one test result - can be helpful.
